Lost houses of Nottinghamshire
Recently published by Nottinghamshire County Council, this fascinating
book provides a richly illustrated gazetteer of over 60 houses
that have regrettably been demolished over the last six centuries.
The buildings listed range from the medieval manor house at
Stoke Bardolph and charming manor house at Kirkby-in-Ashfield
to the impressive Nuthall Temple and Clumber House. The book can be
bought at major public libraries in the county and from Nottinghamshire
Archives for the very reasonable price of £5.99.

Facsimile of John Speed's map of Nottinghamshire
published
Nottinghamshire County Council has produced a colour copy of John
Speed's map of the county, originally published in 1610. The maps
cost £4.99
and can be purchased at major libraries in the county or from Libraries
Archives and
Information Headquarters, Fourth Floor, County Hall (Please ring
0115 977 4401 before visiting County Hall).

New book on Mansfield's history
David J Bradbury has had his latest book, Mansfield: A Pictorial
History, published by Phillimore & Co. The book covers
the story of Mansfield's transformation into an industrial centre
and is lavishly illustrated. Many of the photographs in
this book are taken from A. S. Buxton's glass-plate negatives.
They reveal
the
dilapidated
condition
of many buildings that he depicted in his well-known watercolours,
now on display at Mansfield Museum.

Viewing the Lifeless Body
A new book about Christopher Swann, Nottinghamshire coroner between
1828 and 1866, has been published by Nottinghamshire County Council.
Coroner's inquests were often held in the nearest public house
to the scene
of the
crime
and
author Bernard Heathcote has assembled a fascinating collection
of cases from over 4,500 inquests reported by the press.
Viewing
the Lifeless Body can be purchased at £7.95 from Nottinghamshire
Archives - Castle Meadow Road, Nottingham - and the main Nottinghamshire
county libraries. It can also be purchased by post by sending a
