The following is the first part of a book which deals with the administration of the Poor Law in Nottingham in the first half of the 17th century. It deals especially with the apprenticing of pauper children.
This book was not known to exist when the volume of the Borough Records covering the 17th century was published, and therefore it has not been printed before.
The Accompts for the weekely payments towards the Releife of the pore, beginninge the XVIth day of March, 1630, tempore Roberti Sherwin Maioris Anno Sexto Regis Caroli.

V° die Septembris, 1631, coram Roberto Sherwin, maiore et omnibus Aldermannis tunc presentibus.
Md. the churchwardens and oversers for the pore in the parishe of St. Maries in Nott have agreed to putt Robt. Twells, sonne of Robt. Twells, laborer apprentice to George Wheateley, tanner, with whome the saied Wheately ys by them ordered to have vis.viiid., whereof Geo. Wheateley ys well contented, which payment beinge approved on by Mr. Maior and his bretheren here present George Wheateley hathe refused to seale the indenture alledginge thatt when hee sees others doe the like hee will receavc him, otherwise nott. Whereupon for his obstinate behavior to the evell example of others hee is committed to prison untill hee putt in suerties for his apparence att the nexte Sessions. And hee accepted the apprentice, sealed ye Indenture, submitted himselfe and was pardoned.
Mr. Richards hath by the lyke allowance of the churchwardens of St. Maries, and the overseers for the pore there receaved Marie Wilcoks, daughter of Anne Wilcoks, wydowe, for 10 yeares, and hee is to have xs. with her to which agreament Mr. Maior and Aldermen have assented.
