Braber, B. and Braber, N., 'From Tangier to Locarno: the experience of war in Nottingham and language use in local newspapers, 1905-1925', Midland History, 46(3), 2021, 318-338.
(Notes: Bibliographical references. 'This article applies a historical linguistic approach to compare specific word choice before, during and after the First World War in a sample of UK newspapers and two Nottingham papers. It finds that language use in Nottingham newspapers was similar to UK papers but at the same time showed marked differences, possibly as a result of local characteristics, circumstances, events and developments, which suggests that people?s experience of war in this city did not always follow an overall UK pattern.' | Publication type: Article in serial | Place: Nottingham | Subject: Culture and recreation > Language and dialect | eBook: DOI: 10.1080/0047729X.2021.1975230 | ISBN/ISSN: | Id number: 13175)
Brooke, C. J. and Ryder, P. F., 'Averham, St Michael, Nottinghamshire: a newly identified pre-Conquest church', The Antiquaries Journal, 102, 2021, 1-23.
(Notes: Illustrations, maps, plans, elevations. Bibliographical references. 'The church of St Michael and All Angels, Averham, is largely constructed of counter-pitched rubble and has long been interpreted as being of the early Norman period. Recent archaeological investigations by the authors have revealed conclusive evidence that the date of part of the fabric is pre-Conquest and that the west tower was originally a possible two-storey porch. Ground-based remote sensing has further revealed complex anomalies in the south and east walls of the tower.' | Publication type: Article in serial | Place: Averham | Subject: Historic environment > Architecture and building > Ecclesiastical > Churches > Individual churches | eBook: DOI: doi.org/10.1017/S0003581521000330 | ISBN/ISSN: | Id number: 13217)
