Yates, M., 'Rebellious vagrants: fires, fights and fisticuffs at the Mansfield Union in the mid-late Victorian period', Midland History, , 2021, 301-317.
(NOTES: Bibliographical references. 'Often depicted as incorrigible rogues and criminal vagabonds, vagrants played a key role in the distribution of welfare in the nineteenth century. Vagrants were viewed as the archetype of an undeserving poor person. Yet, the same punitive legislation that aimed to deter them, mandated that they should receive some form of indoor workhouse relief. This new study explores the tensions in the didactic problem of vagrancy encounters. Exploration of the reasons behind vagrant rebellion, through covert and overt actions is best suited to a refined case-study analysis of Mansfield poor law union, where an abundance of radical cases have been overlooked and undervalued. This refinement of an under-researched and often misunderstood field of study will identify the poor law rhetoric behind the making of the vagrant criminal and its social realities in the midlands.' | PLACE: Mansfield | SUBJECT: Local government and services > Poor law and poor relief > Vagrancy | ONLINE: DOI: 10.1080/0047729X.2021.1975232 | ISBN/ISSN: | PUBLICATION TYPE: Article in serial | ID NUMBER: 13177)

(NOTES: Bibliographical references. 'This article applies a historical linguistic approach to compare specific word choice before, during and after the First World War in a sample of UK newspapers and two Nottingham papers. It finds that language use in Nottingham newspapers was similar to UK papers but at the same time showed marked differences, possibly as a result of local characteristics, circumstances, events and developments, which suggests that people?s experience of war in this city did not always follow an overall UK pattern.' | PLACE: Nottingham | SUBJECT: Culture and recreation > Language and dialect | ONLINE: DOI: 10.1080/0047729X.2021.1975230 | ISBN/ISSN: | PUBLICATION TYPE: Article in serial | ID NUMBER: 13175)

Crook, D., Robin Hood : Legend and Reality, Woodbridge, Suffolk: The Boydell Press, 2020, xiv, 298 p.
(NOTES: Illustrations, maps. Bibliography. Index. 'Begins by tracing the development of the legend, and contemporary views about it, between the thirteenth and early twenty-first centuries, taking account both of new interpretative literature on the subject and fresh discoveries from the author's own research in the early records of the English royal administration and common law. It then gives a detailed account of the places that came to be associated with the legend, and of evidence illustrating the importance of the outlaw's name in the development of English surnames. The concluding chapters deal with the administration of criminal law in medieval England, and the evidence that points to the possible origins of the legend in the activities of a notorious Yorkshire criminal, tracked down and beheaded in the county in 1225.' | PLACE: Nottinghamshire; | SUBJECT: Culture and recreation > Myths and legends > Robin Hood | ONLINE: - | ISBN/ISSN: 9781783275434 | PUBLICATION TYPE: Monograph | ID NUMBER: 13056)
